Never Forget That Leadership Is All About Caring

With all the critical aspects of leadership that I have shared in previous blogs over the past few weeks, I was reminded this week what of the most critical aspect that makes the most difference. In fact, I had an experience this week that reminded me that I simply have not commented sufficiently about the importance of caring as a leader.

I had a family situation during this past week that forced me to spend a considerable amount of time in a hospital interfacing with multiple physicians. From that activity, I was at some point during this week hit like a “ton of bricks” with my impressions of real leadership which was not driven by the title of any of the physicians, not by their level of technical competence (very smart and dedicated folks) but what really impressed me was the degree to which they listened and truly cared about my family situation.

I am sure that many of you have heard the old saying “that people don’t care what you know until they know you care!” Just as I discussed in my book, it does not matter how good you are at change, communications, alignment of business objectives and many more of the other Transformational Leadership attributes unless those you are leading really believe you care about them.

As I also wrote in my book and I continue to believe very strongly, you have to win the hearts and minds of your organization to really drive buy-in for your leadership objectives. In other words, you have to genuinely care! I am convinced that with my experiences in the past week that the physicians that will really help my family and lead to good a medical solution as possible are those that have taken the time to exhibit real care.
