Vision—Seeing Things Not Yet Realized

leadership mentoring

In my last blog, I talked about involvement versus commitment. I stated that I clearly believe that any committed leader will have the vision, and the passion to excite others about that vision and the discipline to drive that vision over the long haul to reality.

I am anxious to take this opportunity with this blog to speak more about the task of visioning as a leader. First, let me define what I mean when I speak of vision. Vision in a business sense is very little about what you can physically see but so much more about what you can see in your mind of things not yet realized in your business/ organization. It is about what you can see in your mind as to what the business needs and can aspire to be in a future state. The vision should create a picture for your business/organization that is clear for all involved as to where they are today and where they need to go in the future to drive business/organizational success. Thus, the beginning and the end of the vision are relatively clear to you and your team once they are communicated. It is the time and work in between the start and finish that are more unclear and will be everchanging and so challenging to you as the leader. In fact, in my book, Chapter 9 is titled “Implementing the Vision Creates Cultural Change”, and I contend this is the reward in Transformational Leadership to see the cultural change that allows or drives a business/ organization toewards its future state or vision.

However, getting other to see the vision, buy-in to the vision and work to turn the vision into a reality is a huge leadership task that is facilitated by passion and discipline. So, in the coming blogs we will begin to explore those two critical tools to drive a vision to reality.
